5 Easy Tips for Staying Healthy this Cold and Flu Season

It's cold and flu season and germs are spreading like wildfire! We're not even to the first snow fall yet and we're already seeing an uptick in students getting stick. Stay healthy by following these 5 easy tips.

  • Boost your immunity by getting enough sleep, exercise and eating a well-balanced diet. Veggies might not be your favorite, but aren't they worth it if they keep you from getting sick? Foods like oranges, spinach, broccoli, and even garlic are loaded with Vitamin C and are natural immunity boosters. You can also find a good multi-vitamin that boosts your immunities. Talk to a pharmacist at CVS or Wallgreens to get a good recommendation.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water, or use an alcohol-based disinfectant hand gel. Kill whatever germs you've come in contact with before they have a chance to make you sick. Also, try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth. If you see a friend touching their eyes, nose, or mouth, encourage them to go wash their hands.
  • Disinfect Surfaces regularly with a disinfectant cleaner. Your door handle, phone, and computer are hot beds for germs! Regularly clean them and try to avoid touching door handles in public spaces.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. When you sneeze with your mouth uncovered, germs are propelled up to 4 feet away!  Use a tissue or your inner elbow, not your hands to stop the germs from being spread. If you do use your hands, wash your hands immediately.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your dorm room until your fever has been gone for 24 hours. Be part of the solution not the problem. Your professor will be glad that you didn't infect the rest of the class. Just be sure to send your professor an email and let them know that you will be missing class for health reasons.
