Are The Good Jobs Back?

It wasn’t’ too long ago that many of us in Higher Education were concerned for our recent graduates. The jobs just weren’t available and the business climate wasn’t looking too good for them even though they finished college with a degree in hand. Today, the economy has recovered to a point where “Good Jobs Are Back,” according the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce.

College graduates these days just may have a leg up on previous graduating classes as it relates to finding a job. A recent article by The Chronicle of Higher Education, suggests that good jobs are out there, especially in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Additionally, the unemployment rate, which has been higher than normal for recent college graduates in the last several years, has actually come down. Does this mean everyone will find a great job right out of college or graduate school? Well, No. But it does mean that good jobs appear to be on the rise for college graduates holding a Bachelor’s degree, and these jobs are also increasing in number according to lower wage jobs that do not require a degree.

“Out of the 2.9 million jobs created since the recovery, 2.8 million have been filled by workers with a least a Bachelor’s degree.”  - Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce.

Here at Eastern Nazarene College, in the recent years we have seen an impressive statistic emerge. 89% of our recent graduates are employed or in graduate school. That’s well above the statistic in this report that states 68% of good jobs are full time and include health insurance.

We all know that a college degree is important and so is the value of that degree. Money Magazine recently published “The 50 Most Affordable Private Colleges” list and Eastern Nazarene College was recognized as the top private college in New England for "Affordability." Additionally, Eastern Nazarene College ranks #11 in the US on "The 50 Most Affordable Christian Colleges and Universities of 2015-2016” List.
