The Items You HAVE TO Bring to College

Congrats! You just got accepted to college and it's time to start packing for a big move! Whether you are moving down the street or across the country, there are a few items that you've just got to bring to college. We've sorted the college packing list into four segments,

  1. Necessities
  2. Things you might not think of but you totally need
  3. Things you definitely don't need but are really nice to have
  4. Not allowed items.

Necessities:

  • Bedding: Sheets, a warm comforter, blankets all for an extra long Twin, and pillows
  • School Supplies: notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, index cards, and sticky notes
  • Bath Items: Towels, personal care items like shampoo, soap, razor, shower caddy, shower shoes, etc.
  • Home Items: laundry bag, laundry detergent, bowls, plates, silverware, cups, dish soap and a sponge, etc.
What you might not have thought of, but you totally should bring:
  • Sturdy Book Bag
  • Dress Clothes
  • Reusable Water Bottle
  • Travel Coffee Mug
  • Surge Protected Power Strip (non-surge protected power strips are not allowed)
  • Fan
  • Command Strips and Hooks
  • Coffee Maker
  • Slippers
  • Closet Organizers

Not necessary, but very nice to have:

  • Rain Boots
  • Tupperware
  • Extra Phone Charger
  • Pictures of Home
  • Space Savers (vacuum bags, large plastic bins)
  • Ethernet Cable
  • Extra Blankets
  • Extra Set of Sheets
  • Beach Towel
  • Umbrella
  • Mini Fridge
  • Microwave
  • TV
  • Desk Lamp
  • Decorative curtains and a curtain rod 
  • Decorative Pillows
  • Salt and Pepper Shakers
  • Snack Food
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Desk Organizer
  • Printer

Cannot bring:

  • Toasters or toaster ovens, hot plates, crock pots, space heaters
  • Halogen lamps
  • Pets (birds, animals, reptiles; fish are permitted in an aquarium no larger than 10 gallons)
  • Wall decorations that are sexually suggestive or advertise alcohol or tobacco
  • Candles, incense, tart or potpourri burners
  • Propane, gasoline, fireworks, guns and ammunition, hunting knives, bows and arrows, or any other weapon
  • "Tube" TVs
  • Used upholstered furniture.
  • Upholstered furniture is allowed only in Young apartments and must comply with California Technical Bulletin 117 fire code. Furniture must have an attached tag with the appropriate fire code listed. Personal non-upholstered furniture made of bamboo or rattan is not permitted. Upholstered furniture is not permitted in non-apartment residence halls, but love seat sized futons may be used as long as the mattress has an attached tag showing it complies with California Technical Bulletin 129 or BFD 1x-11.”
