How Can Being a Part of the ENC Community Be a Faithful Expression of “offering our bodies to God as living sacrifices”?
Here is a powerful Christian call: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:1-2)
These verses point a way forward into a bright future as we respond vibrantly to God’s overtures of love and mercy. Since God has had mercy on us, our grateful response should be one of utter whole-heartedness of obedience. But, what does a life like that look like and how to we begin to live this out?
Placing ourselves in the mainstream of God’s active grace has a shaping and forming function. Entering the ENC Community is one of those graced places.
First, we acknowledge God’s mercy to us! The Christian life is always lived out in response to God’s generous kindness. Second, offering our bodies to God (not just our spirits!) is the act and content of Christian worship. We worship God best when we give him our bodies. Third, we seek to be transformed so that we can discern God’s will for our moral lives.
The Apostle Paul calls us to concrete action in response to God’s love. I believe that this is only possible by becoming a part of a vibrant and dynamic Christian community. ENC is just such a community. Here we live out together the vision of the Kingdom of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. We become part of an ongoing historical people who care deeply about faithfulness to Jesus Christ – living out our basic claim that Jesus is Lord!
Being Shaped and Formed
Scholars tell us that what we do with our bodies, how we live our lives, is one of the most important questions in today’s world. Living out a faithful life is one of the most important purposes at ENC. Learning to develop healthy Christian relationships, engaging ethical life, serving the Kingdom by serving the world, and living out a covenant relationship together are the most powerful features of life at ENC. We allow our bodies to be “presented” to God by participating in these life-giving practices of the faith
