The ENC Honors Scholar Society – Beyond the Classroom

Posted by ENC on Mar 5, 2015 4:13:13 PM

Eastern Nazarene College has a long history of students participating in the Honors Scholar Society. Founded in 1936, it continues to be instrumental in enriching the lives of ENC students who enjoy its rigorous academic environment.

Academic-Symposium-PostersAs an Honors Scholar, students spend additional time with one another and professors, encouraging participation in activities that stretch the mind and strengthen the heart. This includes opportunities for scholarship and research, academic and social events (like BBQs!) as well as professional exposure in areas that foster social cohesion and intellectual discourse.

One course that ties these ideas together is the Boston Lectures Seminar course. Students spend an afternoon taking advantage of the wealth of academic and cultural opportunities of the Greater Boston area – such as lectures, tours, museums, and more – and discuss the event with professors over coffee or a meal.

The relationships I built with professors really prepared me to move forward from here because it helped me to see what I could achieve from a much broader perspective.

Through the Honors Scholar Society, students challenge one another and professors challenge their way of thinking above and beyond the everyday classroom environment. This combination provides a springboard for students to discover how they can excel beyond their expectations. Academic rigor turns into advanced critical thinking skills that are so important in today’s professional environments.

We knew no precedent for what we wanted to do… We would be genuine in scholarship, genuine in religion – the two balance, each truer because of the other’s truth.
Dean Bertha Munro - Founding Dean of the College
