The Value of Internships

Posted by ENC Student Life on Oct 20, 2016 8:56:25 AM

Being able to score an internship while in college is a major accomplishment. Regardless of what you are majoring in, learning from those who are doing the job you hope to get is a great way to gain hands on experience. An internship gives you the foundation of the skills that you will need in the real world, even if those skills don't directly relate to your major. In addition, an internship can expose you to information that goes beyond classroom learning and allows you to be more confident in your academics and self overall.

An internship of any kind gives you the opportunity to be a competitive applicant when you are applying to jobs or graduate school. It gives a graduate school or employer a sense of who you are when they see where you have interned. It also shows that you are committed and passionate about excelling in your career and learning outside of the classroom.

In addition, an internship can also make you stand out as a student while at ENC. You will be able to learn new things and share them with your professors, peers, and the rest of the ENC community.  Many students here at ENC who have participated in internships have presented what they learned at the Academic Symposium and have been honored and recognized for their great efforts and their contribution to the growth of academic excellence.

Furthermore, students should always consider an internship regardless of potential pay. The value of interning is based heavily on the experience rather than the monetary value. For instance, applying to an internship at a prestigious location without pay at a place where you will be expected to work hard, might just be the place that prepares you for the real world and for growth in all aspects of life. On the other hand, a paid internship at a less prominent location may not be as challenging or may not open as much doors for you in the long run. Overall, it is imperative to consider the variations offered in internships and to pick wisely. One internship can have an immense impact on your career and life, while other internships may not have such a lasting influence upon you after you finish your time with the organization. Overall, an internship can pave the way for outstanding  recommendation letters, a broader professional network, and even a permanent job after graduating from college!
